The University of Alabama at Birmingham serves students, patients, the community and the global need for
discovery, knowledge, dissemination, education, creativity and the application of groundbreaking solutions.
We are the leader among comprehensive public urban research universities and academic medical centers.

           UAB Start
UAB Start is a program designed for high school juniors and seniors to enroll in courses with UAB to earn high
school andcollege credit or just college credit. Through GEAR UP Alabama, this program includes high school
students in the graduating classes of 2020 and 2021. In order for students to received high school credit, their
school/ school system would need to have a formal Dual/Concurrent Enrollment agreement with UAB through
              GEAR UP Alabama.

Dual enrollment means that students are earning high school and college credit at the same time.
Concurrent enrollment means that students are only earning college credit.

Students can apply for dual/concurrent enrollment in order to take courses as a non-degree seeking student at
UAB while still completing high school and may be able to apply credit earned at UAB both towards college
requirements and towards the high school diploma.
Individual courses taken by dual/concurrent enrollment must be pre-approved by the student’s high school.
Prior to each term of enrollment, the dual/concurrent enrollment option, the student must submit a letter from
the high school identifying the pre-approved course (s) to be taken for dual credit.
